Help! My Parents Won’t Let Me Stay Home
I’m 16 years old, and my parents aren’t really taking care of me when I’m sick. I don’t have a fever, but I definitely feel unwell—I’m dealing with constant coughing fits, sneezing, a stuffy nose, and a really sore throat. My stepmom keeps saying I’m sick and wants me out of the house to avoid catching anything, but I genuinely feel that I shouldn’t have to go to school.
While I know I can keep up with my schoolwork, I’m worried about spreading whatever I have to my friends. Plus, I think I need some time to rest and recuperate. How can I convince my parents to let me stay home? This situation is really tough, and I’m not feeling great.
I’m really sorry to hear that you’re feeling this way. It sounds really tough, especially when you’re not getting the support you need at home. Since you’re worried about your friends getting sick, you might want to explain that to your parents. Let them know how you’re feeling and that you believe staying home would not only help you recover faster but also protect your classmates from getting sick.
You could also suggest that you keep up with your schoolwork from home — maybe you can offer to check in with your teachers for assignments. If they see that you’re responsible and committed to keeping up with your studies, they might be more inclined to support your decision to stay home. And if you haven’t already, consider finding an adult that you trust, like a teacher or school counselor, who might be able to help advocate for you if needed. Take care of yourself!
