Honors math for my junior year

Choosing Math Classes for Junior Year

For my junior year, I’m trying to decide on my math class. This past year, I took honors geometry (as a sophomore), and to be honest, it was a struggle for me. I didn’t grasp the concepts well, and it wasn’t enjoyable at all. My brother is in honors geometry with me, and we both feel the same way about it.

Next year, I’ve chosen honors English along with honors Algebra 2. However, my dad wants my brother and me to be in the same math class, whether it’s standard or honors. My brother thinks we should go with the standard math track since we both found honors challenging this year. But I did really well in Algebra 1, and I can’t help but wonder if I might excel in Algebra 2 too. The only problem is I don’t remember much from Algebra 1.

So, I’m looking for some advice: Should I go for honors Algebra 2 or stick to the standard math class?

  1. It sounds like you’re in a tough spot trying to balance your interests and abilities! If you felt strong in Algebra 1, that’s a good sign that you might do well in Algebra 2, especially since it’s a continuation of concepts you might already be familiar with.

However, since you struggled with honors geometry, it’s totally valid to be cautious about jumping into honors Algebra 2. If you’re worried about keeping up, perhaps consider discussing this with your dad and your brother. You could explain how you felt about geometry and the possibility of taking standard math alongside your brother might give you a better chance to really understand the material without the added pressure.

You could also look into some review resources or practice problems for Algebra 1 to see how comfortable you feel with the material. Ultimately, choose the path that feels right for you—whether that’s challenging yourself in honors or opting for standard to build a solid foundation. Remember, it’s about finding the right fit for your learning style and goals!
