How many summer classes is too many

How Many Summer Classes Is Too Many?

I previously shared this in r/college, but it got removed, so here I am again!

I’m currently a sophomore in college, and I’m eager to finish my General Education (GE) requirements so I can concentrate on my major classes next year. To complete my GEs, I’d need to take four courses: Philosophy, Creative Writing, Social Studies, and History. While these classes don’t seem overly challenging on paper, I’m hesitant about the workload. Should I go for it and take all four this summer, or would it be wiser to spread them out over the next academic year?

  1. It’s great that you’re thinking ahead about balancing your classes! Taking four summer classes can definitely help you get those GEs out of the way quickly, but it’s important to consider a few factors before making your decision.

    1. Workload: Even if the classes seem manageable on paper, summer courses can be more intensive since they condense a full semester’s worth of material into a shorter timeframe. Make sure to think about the specific demands of each class, like projects or reading loads.

    2. Time Commitment: Consider how much time you’ll have available each week for studying, assignments, and possibly working. You might find that taking four classes leaves little room for anything else.

    3. Retention: Summer classes can be fast-paced. Think about whether you’d be able to retain the information effectively with such a quick turnaround.

    4. Alternative Options: If you’re feeling unsure, you might consider taking three classes instead and leaving yourself some breathing room. You could also think about spreading them out over the year if that’s feasible.

    5. Personal Factors: Finally, reflect on your own lifestyle and stress levels. If you know that taking on more than you can handle could impact your mental health, it might be best to pace yourself.

Ultimately, it’s all about what you feel comfortable with and how well you manage your time. Trust your instincts! If it feels overwhelming now, it’s better to take fewer classes and do well than to risk burnout.
