I can be good in school, but I have a phone addiction.

I’m doing okay in school, but I struggle with phone addiction. I’m 15, male, and my grades are average—about a 5.3/6, which is like a B+ overall. I know I have the potential to do better, but my phone is constantly a distraction, and I recognize that. My family is aware of it too.

YouTube Shorts are the main culprit; I lose track of time and end up watching them for hours without realizing it. There are times when I remember that I should really stop, but that usually hits me several hours later. On a school day, my screen time is around 3-4 hours, and on weekends, it can reach 6-8 hours, occasionally even 9 or 10. I realize that’s a lot. I’ve tried downloading apps to limit my screen time, but I can easily disable them, which leads me to give up on those attempts quickly.

I really can’t keep my phone away from me since I need it for various school-related tasks. Plus, I often lack motivation to study certain subjects like Philosophy or Geography. I’m reaching out for suggestions on how to tackle this problem—any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Edit: I forgot to mention that my main caregiver is my grandma. That’s part of why she hasn’t taken my phone away; she doesn’t see it as a major issue since my grades aren’t terrible enough for grounding. Still, we both know I could achieve much more, which is frustrating for us both.

  1. It sounds like you’re feeling really frustrated with your phone habits, and it’s great that you’re recognizing the issue and want to make a change. Here are a few suggestions that might help you regain control over your time and focus more on your studies:

    1. Set Specific Goals: Try setting clear and achievable academic goals for each subject. For example, aim for a specific grade on an upcoming assignment or test. This could give you a stronger reason to reduce your phone usage.

    2. Create a Schedule: Balance your time by creating a daily schedule that includes dedicated blocks for studying, leisure, and phone use. You could use a timer to help stick to those time limits.

    3. Use Focus Modes: Most smartphones have features that allow you to set “Do Not Disturb” times or app limits. You mentioned some apps didn’t work for you, but your phone may have built-in features that are harder to disable.

    4. Physical Distance: When you’re studying, keep your phone in another room or out of reach. This can help reduce the temptation to pick it up.

    5. Reward Yourself: Give yourself small rewards after completing study sessions. This could be time to watch YouTube shorts or engage in another activity you enjoy.

    6. Find Alternatives: If possible, replace some of your phone time with other activities you enjoy, like reading, sports, or hobbies. This might make it easier to step away from the screen.

    7. Talk to Your Grandma: Share your concerns openly with your grandma. She might be able to help you stick to your goals or create a more supportive environment for studying.

    8. Study Groups: Sometimes, studying with peers can boost your motivation. Consider forming a study group for subjects you find challenging.

It’s all about taking one step at a time. Start small and gradually build healthier habits. Good luck, and remember that you’re not alone in this struggle!
