I’m having a serious family emergency. Do I look like an idiot for asking to makeup an assignment?

I’m currently facing a serious family emergency, and I’m feeling uncertain about requesting to make up an assignment.

On Sunday night, I had to rush my mom to the ER due to severe chest pain, coughing blood, and breathing difficulties. Doctors discovered she has fluid in her lungs, possibly due to pneumonia, but there was so much fluid that they couldn’t confirm it through the x-ray or CT scan. They prescribed medication and scheduled a follow-up for 48 hours later to see a specialist and drain the fluid, which wasn’t possible during her ER visit. The fluid will be tested to determine whether it’s pneumonia or lung cancer, which is understandably weighing heavily on us.

I have no control over the timing of her procedure. Right now, my mom is in bed, trying to find comfort while dealing with fluid buildup in her lungs, and delaying the procedure isn’t an option. The appointment time doesn’t align with my class schedule; it falls just 30 minutes into the class tomorrow, making it impossible for me to attend and ensure she gets the care she needs. Hospital policy requires someone to accompany her, and unfortunately, I’m the only one available to help. I also want to be there for her during this frightening time.

I’ve reached out to my instructor to explain my situation, emphasizing its urgency and my lack of control over the circumstances. I offered to provide proof of the appointment or any documentation needed to see if there’s an option for making up the assignment, which carries significant weight in my grade.

This is the first time I’ve had to ask for an exemption like this, and I’ve been hesitant, but I feel I have no other choice. Unfortunately, I’m aware that many instructors are reluctant to allow makeup assignments because of students who lie, which complicates things for those of us facing genuine emergencies. I haven’t received a response from my instructor yet, and I’m uncertain about what to do next. While I’m deeply concerned about potentially failing the assignment—or the class—it’s even more distressing to think about my mom’s health. She truly needs this procedure.

Update: My instructor hasn’t responded to my email at all, which is disappointing. I’ve had ongoing issues with this teacher; her approach towards students has often felt unkind. I honestly didn’t expect a response, but I would have appreciated even a simple acknowledgment along with her condolences for my mom. Thankfully, our neighbor was able to give my mom a ride to the hospital, and a friend met her there to help her get home afterward. Now we’re anxiously waiting for the results and hoping for the best.

  1. I’m so sorry to hear about your mom’s condition and the incredibly tough situation you’re facing. It’s completely understandable that you’re prioritizing her health and well-being during this time; being there for her is the most important thing right now.

Asking for a makeup assignment or an alternative is not idiotic at all; it’s a responsible way to handle a situation that is out of your control. You’ve done the right thing by reaching out to your instructor and providing context for your request. It’s unfortunate that you didn’t receive a response, especially considering the gravity of what you’re going through.

Hopefully, once things settle down with your mom’s health, you can follow up with your instructor, but right now, focus on your mom. Remember that your well-being matters too, and it’s okay to take the time you need for your family. I’m sending positive thoughts that everything goes well with your mom’s procedure and recovery. Take care of yourself, and don’t hesitate to reach out for support from friends, fellow students, or counselors during this challenging time. You’ve got this!
