Feeling Overwhelmed (Repost)
I’m trying to create a new account because I wasn’t happy with my old one, but I forgot that I can’t post right away.
So, please disregard that.
Hi everyone, I’m not really sure how to start, but I’ve been having a tough time with my grades this year, especially in chemistry.
When I’m in class, I struggle to grasp any of the concepts, and I often have trouble understanding my teacher due to her strong accent.
Right now, we’re learning to name ionic and molecular compounds, but I can’t seem to memorize the material because we’re given such limited time.
I would really appreciate anyone who could share some tips or strategies to help me with this. My grades have been 70 for the first marking period and 60 for the second.
Now we’re in the third marking period, and if I don’t improve in the next two, I’ll have to go to summer school, which is frustrating for me and my parents.
If anyone has any advice on how to better retain this information, I would be incredibly grateful! Thank you!
Hey! It sounds like you’re dealing with a lot right now, and it’s completely understandable to feel overwhelmed. Chemistry can be tricky, especially when there’s a language barrier involved. Here are a few tips that might help you out with naming ionic and molecular compounds:
Use Mnemonics: Create simple phrases or songs to help you remember the names of common ions (like SO₄²⁻ for sulfate or Na⁺ for sodium). Sometimes associating the ion with a fun image or story can help them stick in your memory.
Practice with Flashcards: Make flashcards for the names and formulas of compounds. On one side, write the name and on the other, write the formula. This way, you can quiz yourself, which can really reinforce your memory.
Online Resources: There are plenty of websites and apps dedicated to chemistry practice. Websites like Khan Academy or ChemCollective have video tutorials and chemistry exercises that might help clarify concepts.
Group Study: If you can, find a study buddy who is strong in chemistry. Explaining concepts to others or hearing them explained in a different way can really help solidify your understanding.
Speak to Your Teacher: It might also be helpful to talk to your teacher after class or during office hours. Let her know that you’re struggling with understanding, and see if she can provide additional resources or clarifications.
Stay Positive & Keep Trying: Remember, it’s okay to struggle, and asking for help is a step in the right direction! Keep practicing, and don’t get too down on yourself. You can improve with time and effort!
Good luck! You’ve got this! 🌟
