Is it my fault I’m failing?

Am I to blame for my struggles in class?

I’m currently taking AP Physics 1, which uses a flipped classroom model. Our teacher assigns Khan Academy videos for us to watch on our own, and then we have self-guided labs during class time. Unfortunately, I’m really struggling and haven’t scored above a D on any tests. I’m not alone in this; several classmates are also finding it hard, while a few who put in hours of studying are barely managing to achieve a B. I do try to study, but with eight other classes, I can’t dedicate as much time as the workload requires. While there are moments of free time, I’d much rather spend those with my family and friends. So, is my failure my fault, or is it a problem with the teaching approach? I feel like the teacher’s style isn’t very effective, but I’d love to hear your thoughts.

  1. It’s understandable to feel overwhelmed, especially with the demands of AP courses and the challenge of a flipped classroom model. It’s not entirely your fault that you’re struggling; different teaching methods work for different students, and it sounds like this one isn’t suiting your learning style. The flipped classroom can be particularly tough if you don’t feel you are getting enough direct instruction.

It’s important to remember that prioritizing your well-being and spending time with family and friends is also crucial. Balancing academics and personal life is key, and it’s a tough balance to strike, especially with multiple classes demanding your time and attention.

If you haven’t already, consider reaching out to your teacher for extra help. They might be willing to provide additional resources or clarification on topics you’re struggling with. Additionally, forming a study group with classmates can provide motivation and a different perspective on the material.

Lastly, don’t hesitate to talk to your school counselor. They can provide support and may help advocate for you if this teaching style is too much. You’re not alone in this, and seeking help is a positive step. Keep working hard, and remember to take care of yourself!
