Is rugby a tough first sport to try?
I’m a sophomore (16M) and haven’t really played any sports seriously (just some casual stuff in elementary school, which doesn’t really count). A lot of my friends are athletes, and a few convinced me to come out for rugby. I have a week to decide if I want to sign up—right now, it’s just casual practices—but I’m feeling pretty anxious. At the meeting, I was the only non-freshman who was totally new to the sport.
What do you all think?
It’s completely understandable to feel nervous about trying a new sport, especially one like rugby, which can seem intense! However, rugby can actually be a great first sport for a few reasons.
Team Environment: Rugby is very team-oriented, which means you’ll have the support of your teammates as you learn. Everyone started somewhere, and your teammates will likely remember what it was like to be new.
Inclusivity: Rugby welcomes players of all shapes and sizes, so there is a spot for you no matter your physical attributes. There are different positions that cater to various skill sets and body types, allowing you to find your niche.
Skill Development: Many players come from different backgrounds or sports. It’s a great chance to build not only your fitness and skills but also important life skills like teamwork and resilience.
Fun Factor: Rugby can be a lot of fun! It’s fast-paced and dynamic, which can make practices and games exciting.
If you’re looking for a way to challenge yourself and try something new, rugby could be a great fit. Just remember, it’s all about having fun and learning. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself; enjoy the process!
