Struggles with Algebra
I’m really struggling with Algebra, no matter how hard I try. I might get decent grades on my assignments, but then one poor test score seems to erase all of my progress from the past few weeks. Even when I nail the assignments, I end up missing the easiest questions on the tests. My teacher even called me out for being the only one to fail an “easy assignment,” which was mortifying in front of the whole class.
I don’t mind the criticism—it’s just a reminder of my struggles—but the way my teacher handles things is frustrating. They tell us to ask questions, yet I’ve seen them berate a classmate who was confused after a long lecture. It’s disheartening to see most of my classmates resorting to cheating or copying, myself included. My friends have no problem with Algebra, consistently scoring high.
This class heavily relies on advanced calculators, and I still find it challenging. In high school, I sometimes even struggle with basic math like addition and subtraction—multiplication? I need to write it down. Division? I can hardly manage that.
I feel like I’m the only one genuinely struggling here. I usually end up with scores in the 20s on tests, and 30s if I’m lucky. Retaking tests often leads to even worse results.
It’s frustrating because this is the only class I’m having such a hard time with, despite it being labeled as easier than regular Algebra. I’m managing better in an AP class—one I’m not even considering for college—where the focus is mostly on projects. English is a breeze for me; I thoroughly enjoy literature, whether it’s writing essays or analyzing stories. I often find myself writing outside of class for fun. History and geography interest me too, although some parts can be a bit dull. I enjoy biology and science overall, though I sometimes struggle due to my own procrastination. Even subjects like art, which I historically disliked, are starting to become interesting for me.
I just wanted to vent a bit after a day where I did well on an essay and projects in other classes, yet Algebra continues to be my major stumbling block.
It sounds like you’re going through a really tough time with Algebra, and I want you to know that you’re not alone in feeling this way. Math can be incredibly challenging for many people, and it’s especially frustrating when you excel in other subjects but struggle in one area that’s supposed to be “easier.”
First off, it’s important to remember that struggling with a specific subject doesn’t make you dumb. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses, and it’s clear from what you’ve written that you have a lot of skills in literature, history, and even in your AP class. It’s perfectly okay to have a subject that doesn’t click for you.
Regarding your teacher, it sounds like they’re not creating the best environment for you or your classmates to feel comfortable asking for help. It’s tough to ask questions when you fear being ridiculed. Maybe try talking to your teacher privately about your struggles? Expressing how you feel may help them understand that their approach isn’t working for you.
Also, if you haven’t already, consider seeking out extra help. This could be a tutor, a learning center at your school, or even online resources. There are many math help websites and apps that break down concepts in a different way that might resonate better with you.
Don’t be too hard on yourself. Just because this one class is tough doesn’t mean you’re not capable or that you won’t succeed in the future. Keep appreciating what you love—like writing and history—and remember that it’s completely okay to ask for help in areas where you’re struggling. You’ve got this!
