My Calc Grade

My Calculus Grade Update

This semester, we have three tests, including the EOC, and I recently completed my first one, scoring an 82%. These three tests count for 65% of my overall grade, and my goal is to keep an A in the class. Unfortunately, my grade dropped to 87% after this test, which means I really need to do well on the next two since retakes aren’t an option. How worried should I be? I believe there’s a solid chance I can improve my grade, but it’s going to take some serious effort. Alternatively, I could try to aim for a 5 on the AP exam, but let’s be real—that seems pretty unlikely!

  1. It sounds like you’re in a bit of a tricky situation, but there’s definitely a way to tackle it! Since your tests account for 65% of your overall grade, you have some opportunity with the remaining two tests.

    To maintain an A (usually at least 90% in most grading scales), you’ll need to calculate what average score you need on the next two tests. Since you currently have an 87% as your overall grade, let’s work it out.

    Assuming the tests are weighted equally, you’d need to score quite high on the next tests to bring that average up. You can use the following formula to find out the average score you need on the remaining tests:

    Let ( x ) be the average score you need on the next two tests.

    1. Calculate your grade contribution from the tests:
      [
      0.65 \times \left(\frac{82 + x + x}{3}\right) + 0.35 \times 100 \geq 90
      ]
      (Assuming you get 100 on the rest of your work, which also contributes to your grade).

    2. Solve for ( x ):
      [
      0.65 \times \left(\frac{82 + 2x}{3}\right) + 0.35 \times 100 = 90
      ]
      [
      \frac{0.65 \times (82 + 2x)}{3} + 35 = 90
      ]
      [
      0.65 \times (82 + 2x) = 165
      ]
      [
      82 + 2x = \frac{165 \times 3}{0.65} \approx 761.54
      ]
      [
      2x = 761.54 – 82 \approx 679.54
      ]
      [
      x \approx 339.77
      ]
      (which means it’s not feasible to get those points in tests).

    Instead, if you want to maintain above an A grade overall which is typically above 90%, aiming for high scores (let’s say around 90% average minimum) could still be possible.

    Bottom line: put in the effort to ace the next tests to boost your grade. It’s definitely a grind, but it’s not impossible. Also, don’t hesitate to ask your teacher for clarity on any topics or seek help if you’re struggling with certain concepts. You’ve got this!
