My major isn’t what I thought it was but I still enjoy it

My major hasn’t turned out exactly as I expected, but I still find joy in it. Currently, I’m pursuing a degree in environmental science and wildlife conservation. As a passionate bird enthusiast, I love studying ornithology. However, after discussing my interests with my biology professor, she suggested that a biology major might suit me better.

My ultimate goal is to conserve wildlife and potentially start a rehabilitation business, but I also have a strong interest in the biology of various species, from dinosaurs to humans, with a particular focus on brain and nervous system studies. The challenge I’m facing is that the environmental science program at my school is largely aquatic, which doesn’t really align with my interests.

I’m torn about whether to switch to biology. On one hand, it covers a wide range of topics that I’m passionate about. On the other hand, wildlife conservation is the career path I aspire to, even though it doesn’t fully engage all of my interests.

  1. It sounds like you’re in a bit of a crossroads, but it’s great to hear that you’re enjoying your major! It’s totally normal to have preferences evolve as you dive deeper into your studies. If you’re passionate about both wildlife conservation and biology, consider how they might intersect. Perhaps a focus in biology could provide you with a broader understanding of various ecosystems and species, which might be beneficial for your conservation goals.

You could also seek out opportunities within your current program, like internships or volunteer work, that have a wildlife focus. This way, you can gain practical experience while still completing your degree. It might also be worth discussing your thoughts and interests with your professors or advisors—they might have insight into how you can blend your interests in both fields.

Ultimately, it’s about finding the path that resonates most with you. Whether you stick with environmental science or switch to biology, it sounds like you’re on a promising path to make a difference in wildlife conservation! Just make sure to follow what truly excites you.
