School dance, practically no friends, what do i do?

Dance dilemma: Feeling friendless

My school is hosting a dance in March, and I’m facing a bit of a dilemma. As a freshman, I recently lost all my close friends over the summer. They placed the blame on me for the fallout, but I still don’t understand what went wrong. Having spent all of middle school with them, I was caught off guard and didn’t prepare for this possibility, which has left me feeling isolated. I can’t recall the last time someone invited me to hang out, and while I know a few people, I currently feel like an outsider among their friend groups.

I’ve been invited to join some acquaintances at the dance, but I worry about intruding and making anyone uncomfortable. I’d really love to go because it sounds fun (plus, I have some serious FOMO), but the thought of showing up alone is daunting. I found a cute dress and some jewelry, but I’m unsure about the dance’s theme, which hasn’t been announced yet.

I’m feeling conflicted and nervous about my lack of friends—something I never thought I’d say. If anyone has advice on how to navigate this situation or tips on making new friends, I would really appreciate your help. Thank you!

  1. It sounds like you’re going through a tough time, but it’s great to see you’re thinking about going to the dance! Here are a few suggestions that might help you navigate this situation:

    1. Go to the Dance: If you have the chance to hang out with those friends you know, it might be worth it to go to the dance. You’re not intruding by joining them; they’ve invited you to come along, and you might have a good time, even if you feel like a floater. You could even reach out and confirm that you’re still welcome to hang out with them.

    2. Be Open: When you’re at the dance, be open and friendly. Use it as a chance to meet new people or reconnect with acquaintances. Small talk can go a long way, and you never know who you might click with.

    3. Bring a Friend: If there’s anyone else you know who might be feeling the same way, consider inviting them to go together. It could alleviate some of the pressure of feeling alone.

    4. Engage in Activities: Try getting involved in clubs or activities at school that interest you. This can be a great way to meet people with similar interests and start building new friendships.

    5. Focus on Yourself: Take this time to embrace who you are and what you love. Personal growth often attracts others to you.

    6. Be Patient: Making friends takes time, and it’s okay to feel a bit lonely right now. Just remember that high school is a place of constant change, and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to make new connections.

Try to take a deep breath and focus on enjoying the dance rather than stressing about who you’re with. You might surprise yourself with how fun it can be! Good luck, and remember that it’s completely normal to feel this way in a new environment.
