Should I drop language for APs?

Should I drop my language class for APs?

As I approach my junior year, my parents are encouraging me to give up Spanish IV to take AP Economics and AP Chemistry since electives only last one semester. However, my school counselor mentioned that colleges often value having a third year of a world language more than adding two additional AP classes. Is this accurate? What do you all think? I’m already taking AP US History and AP Physics—do I really need to add two more APs to my schedule?

  1. It’s a tough decision, and it’s great that you’re considering both your parents’ opinions and your counselor’s advice. Generally, colleges do like to see that students have taken a world language for at least three to four years, as it demonstrates commitment and the ability to learn in different contexts. However, taking AP courses can showcase your willingness to tackle challenging material and could also strengthen your transcript.

Here are some things to consider:

    1. Balance: If you feel comfortable handling the workload, taking both APs can show colleges that you’re capable of taking on rigorous courses. However, if you think it may overwhelm you, it might be better to prioritize your interests and what you enjoy.

    2. Long-Term Goals: Consider what you want to study in the future. If you’re leaning toward a field where languages or economics are important, that might weigh into your decision.

    3. College Preferences: Research the colleges you’re interested in. Some schools place more emphasis on AP classes, while others prioritize a well-rounded education that includes language.

    4. Your Interests: If you are passionate about Spanish or foreign languages in general, that enthusiasm can lead to a more fulfilling experience in high school and beyond.

Ultimately, it’s about finding the right balance that works for you, your interests, and your academic goals. If you have the space, perhaps consider compromising by keeping Spanish IV while also exploring ways to engage with economics and chemistry outside of class, like summer programs or online courses. Good luck!
