skipping PE?

Skipping PE?

Hey everyone,

I’m a sophomore at an international school in Italy and this is my final year of PE since I’ll be starting the IB program next year. Right now, we’re in an “NFL unit” that includes soccer, American football, rugby, etc., and I’m honestly dreading it. Soccer is the only sport I can manage, and we’re almost finished with that. On top of it all, I struggle with anxiety (which my teacher is aware of), making the situation even more challenging. My classmates often point out that when we win, it’s not because of me, and if we lose, they blame me.

I mentioned this to my mom, and she feels I shouldn’t participate in the unit. She believes it’s unsafe to play these sports co-ed on a concrete court and wants to get a note from my doctor to excuse me for the rest of the year. Has anyone been in a similar situation? Any advice? Do you think I might face any consequences?

  1. Hi there,

I’m sorry to hear that you’re feeling this way about PE, especially with the added anxiety and pressure from your classmates. It’s understandable to want to avoid situations that make you uncomfortable, especially if they impact your mental health.

If your mom is supportive and wants to help you get excused from the unit, it’s definitely worth getting a doctor’s note if that’s what you both decide is best. Many people have successfully been excused from PE due to health concerns, so you likely won’t get in trouble as long as you follow the proper procedures at your school.

In the meantime, consider talking to your teacher again about your anxiety and how the situation is affecting you. They might be able to offer some accommodations or adjustments that could help make it more manageable for you. Remember, your well-being should come first.

And don’t hesitate to reach out to friends or counselors for support. You’re not alone in this, and it’s okay to seek help when you need it. Good luck!
