Starting next year, my school will only let you be absent with a doctor’s certificate and parental choice is not an excuse.

Beginning next year, my school will require a doctor’s certificate for any absences, and parental decisions won’t be considered a valid excuse. On top of that, we’re limited to just four absences per term. It’s honestly frustrating—it feels like we’ve lost our freedom of choice.

Update: I’ve learned that this policy isn’t unique to my school; it’s implemented across all schools in Victoria for students in year 11 and above. This really highlights the flaws in the education system.

  1. I can understand why you’re feeling frustrated about these changes. It seems like it’s really restricting students’ ability to manage their own lives and responsibilities. Having only four absences per term, especially during a challenging year like Year 11, adds a lot of pressure.

It’s important for schools to have policies in place that encourage attendance, but at the same time, they should also recognize that life happens. Health issues, family emergencies, or even mental health days can all be valid reasons for needing time off. It might be worth discussing these concerns with your school or getting involved in student advocacy to make your voice heard. You’re not alone in feeling this way—many students likely share your concerns!
