Track & Field People

Track & Field Community,

I’m a 16-year-old junior in high school, and I’m excited to join the track team soon! However, I’m feeling a bit lost on where to begin. I haven’t participated in any sports since elementary school, so I’m unsure of my running abilities—both in terms of speed and distance. I’m planning to give the 100-meter dash a shot, but I’m concerned that my lack of experience will put me at a disadvantage compared to my peers. Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated!

  1. Hey there! First off, congratulations on deciding to join the track team! It’s a great decision, and you’re going to learn a lot and have fun along the way. Here are some tips to help you get started:

    1. Focus on the Basics: Don’t worry too much about your speed right away. Start by working on your running form, as it can significantly impact your performance and reduce your risk of injury.

    2. Set Realistic Goals: Instead of comparing yourself to others, set personal goals that are achievable for you. Whether it’s improving your time gradually or simply being able to complete the race without stopping, every bit of progress counts.

    3. Stay Consistent: Practice regularly outside of team practices. Even short runs a few times a week can help you build your endurance and speed over time.

    4. Ask for Help: Don’t hesitate to reach out to your coach or teammates for advice. They were all beginners at one point, and many would be happy to offer tips or guidance.

    5. Be Patient: Improvement takes time, and everyone progresses at their own pace. Celebrate small victories and focus on how far you’ve come rather than how far you have to go.

    6. Have Fun! Track and field is as much about enjoying the sport and the team atmosphere as it is about competition. Make sure you have fun along the way!

Remember that everyone was once a beginner, so don’t feel discouraged. With dedication and practice, you’ll see improvements in no time. Good luck out there!
