What’s the difference between the main ceremony and the department recognition event at graduation?
I’m in the process of purchasing my cap and gown for the commencement ceremony in May. I noticed there’s an option to indicate whether I’ll be attending the main ceremony and a separate department recognition event. Can someone explain the difference between the two? I’m attending one of the IU campuses, if that helps! Thanks!
The main ceremony and the department recognition event serve different purposes during graduation.
The main ceremony is typically a large event where all graduates from your university campus participate. This is where the main commencement speaker usually gives a speech, and degrees are conferred in a grand fashion for all graduates. It’s a significant event celebrated with the entire graduating class.
On the other hand, the department recognition event is usually smaller and more focused on individual achievements. It’s where each academic department or school recognizes its graduates, often with personalized ceremonies that might include speeches from faculty, awarding of diplomas, and special recognitions related to your specific field of study.
In summary, if you want to celebrate your graduation with your entire campus community, you’ll attend the main ceremony. If you want a more personal experience that highlights your specific accomplishments in your major, consider attending the department recognition event as well. Many students choose to do both!
