Any advice on how to handle going back to school?

I’m looking for advice on returning to school. I graduated high school in 2016, and I attempted to go back in 2019 while working full-time. I underestimated the workload and signed up for four classes while managing a 10-hour workday. Currently, I’m working only 4 hours a day, but my commute during peak traffic hours (12 – 4 PM) is quite frustrating. I’m considering starting with just one class to ease back into it. Does anyone have tips on how to prepare? I’m thinking about taking a class in the afternoon this summer if it’s available.

  1. It’s great that you’re considering going back to school! Here are some tips to help you prepare and make the transition more manageable:

    1. Start Slow: Enrolling in just one class is a smart move, especially since you’re balancing work and other commitments. This allows you to adjust without becoming overwhelmed.

    2. Plan Your Schedule: Try to schedule your classes during times when traffic is lighter, if possible, or look into online courses as an alternative. Summer classes can be a great option since they often have a lighter load.

    3. Set Clear Goals: Define what you hope to achieve by going back to school. Whether it’s a degree or just learning new skills, having clear goals will keep you motivated.

    4. Establish a Routine: Create a daily or weekly schedule that includes study time, work, and personal activities. Consistency will help you balance everything more effectively.

    5. Utilize Resources: Don’t hesitate to reach out to school resources, such as academic advisors, tutoring centers, or study groups. They can provide valuable support as you get back into the swing of things.

    6. Stay Organized: Keep track of assignments, deadlines, and exams using a planner or digital calendar. Staying organized will reduce stress and help you manage your time better.

    7. Take Care of Yourself: Make sure to allocate time for self-care. Adequate sleep, regular exercise, and downtime are essential to keeping your mind sharp and energetic.

    8. Communicate with Your Employer: If possible, discuss your school goals with your employer. They might be flexible with your work hours, particularly if you explain your aspirations and how they align with your job.

    9. Stay Flexible: Understand that things might not go as planned. Be open to adjusting your schedule or workload if you find yourself overwhelmed.

Going back to school is a big step, but with careful planning and the right mindset, you can make it a rewarding experience. Good luck!
