I am unmotivated and I feel like a failure

I’m feeling really unmotivated and like I’ve let myself down. I’m approaching 25, and my dream has always been to become a dental hygienist.

In high school, I really struggled. I barely did any work or studying, and somehow I managed to graduate, mostly because the school district didn’t want to have a student not graduate at the same time as someone else in my class.

Fast forward a few years: I’ve completed several courses—algebra, English, psychology, sociology, chemistry, anatomy and physiology 1—and I’m currently enrolled in microbiology and anatomy and physiology 2. Unfortunately, I’m not doing well in either of those classes.

The semester began at the end of January, and I’ve already skipped multiple labs for both subjects. The format is online lectures that I can do at home, but the labs are in person. I can’t understand why I keep skipping. I dread failing these classes; they’re prerequisites for dental hygiene school, and I just found out last week that I was waitlisted, which completely devastated me.

At this point, I feel like it’s too late for me. I really don’t want to hear anyone tell me to just go to class. I drive 45 minutes to campus and get there early, but when it’s time to walk into the lab, I freeze. I feel like a failure, and my anxiety takes over. I’ve talked to a counselor who offered some tips, but when it comes time to actually attend lab, it feels like my feet are glued to the floor.

I find myself wondering if I was meant to be in school or if I can even become a hygienist. But there’s a small voice inside urging me to get up and keep pushing forward. If anyone has advice or encouragement to share, I would really appreciate it. I feel so lost right now.

    6. Celebrate Your Progress: You’ve already accomplished so much by passing challenging classes and showing resilience. Take a moment to recognize your achievements, no matter how small they seem right now.

    7. Reframe Failure: Failing in a class or getting waitlisted doesn’t define you. Many successful people have faced setbacks on their journey. Use them as learning experiences to grow stronger.

    8. Reflect on Your Why: Remember why you wanted to become a dental hygienist in the first place. Reconnecting with your passion and the reasons behind your goals might help reignite your motivation.

    Lastly, remember that you’re not alone in this struggle, and it’s okay to feel lost sometimes. You have the strength within you to push through this and find your way. Take it one day at a time, and be kind to yourself. You’ve got this!
