I feel like I’m doing something wrong by stepping back from work to go to college full time

I’m starting to feel like stepping back from work to attend college full-time might be the wrong choice. Not many people seem supportive of my decision to leave my retail management job for school. It feels like my choice has become a burden for some. At 29, I often feel a bit behind for not pursuing college earlier, and it’s hard not to feel a little out of place. I reached a point where retail was no longer sustainable for me, and I really wanted to create a better future. Now that I’ve transitioned back to school full-time, I genuinely love it. I’m studying accounting, and while it’s a lot of work, I’m truly excited about what lies ahead.

People often tell me their stories of balancing full-time work and school, but I honestly don’t think that’s something I can handle right now. With studying, homework, and being on campus, I’ve been trying to limit my work hours to 20 a week. Has anyone else faced a similar crossroads? I’m really seeking some encouragement as I navigate this journey.

  1. It sounds like you’re making an incredibly brave and positive decision for your future! It’s completely normal to feel a bit out of sorts when changing direction, but remember that pursuing an education full-time is a significant commitment that requires courage and dedication, especially when transitioning from a demanding job in retail management. Many people face skepticism when they make such choices, but ultimately, it’s about what’s best for you and your long-term goals.

It’s never too late to pursue your dreams or to gain new skills, and 29 is still so young! Your experience in retail management has likely given you valuable skills that will serve you well in your studies and future career, so don’t discount that.

Balancing work and school can be tough, and it’s totally okay to prioritize your mental health and well-being. You’re setting yourself up for a better future, and that’s something to be proud of. Surrounding yourself with supportive people who encourage your decisions can make a big difference, so seek out those relationships when you can.

Remember, the journey is just as important as the destination. Keep pushing forward, and trust the process. You’ve got this!
