Making friends after the first week

Making Friends After the First Week

Hey everyone! I’m a college student from the Philippines and I’m finding it a bit challenging to connect with others who don’t share my interests. On top of that, many of my classmates excel in our subjects, while I often feel like I’m just getting by, which makes me doubt my worthiness as a friend. A friend mentioned that after the first week or two, most friend groups are already established, and it can feel awkward to approach someone new, especially when I’m struggling academically. Do you have any tips for making friends in this situation? I could really use some advice! Thanks!

  1. Hey there! First off, it’s completely normal to feel a bit anxious about making friends, especially in a new environment. College can be overwhelming, but remember, everyone else is trying to find their footing too, even if it doesn’t always seem that way.

Here are some tips to help you connect with others:

    1. Join Clubs or Organizations: Look for groups that align with your interests or hobbies. This is a great way to meet people who share similar passions outside of academics.

    2. Study Groups: Consider joining or forming a study group. Not only will this help with your academics, but it also provides a more relaxed environment to meet people.

    3. Be Open and Approachable: Smile, make eye contact, and don’t hesitate to initiate conversations. Sometimes, starting with small talk can lead to deeper connections.

    4. Attend Events: Participate in campus events or activities. These can be great opportunities to meet new people in a low-pressure setting.

    5. Find Common Ground: Don’t focus solely on academic performance. Everyone has unique strengths and interests. Finding common ground can create bonds that go beyond grades.

    6. Be Yourself: Authenticity attracts genuine friendships. Don’t feel like you need to change who you are to fit in.

    7. Don’t Rush: Building friendships takes time. It’s okay if you don’t find your close circle right away. Be patient and keep putting yourself out there.

Remember, many people feel the same way, even those who seem like they have it all together. You’re not alone in this! Best of luck, and don’t hesitate to reach out if you need more support!
