Considering a Double Major
Hey everyone,
I’m currently majoring in Exercise Science and have a minor in Biology. My goal is to pursue either physical therapy or physician assistant school after graduation. With my minor in Biology, I’ll have all the prerequisites I need for grad school. However, I’m contemplating whether it’s worth it to double major in Biology and Exercise Science. This choice would extend my graduation timeline by one semester. I would appreciate any advice or insights you might have! Thank you!
Hi! It sounds like you have a solid plan in place with your exercise science major and biology minor. Whether or not to double major depends on a few factors:
Career Goals: If you feel that a double major in biology will significantly enhance your knowledge and skills for physical therapy (PT) or physician assistant (PA) school, it could be worth the extra semester. Consider how much the additional coursework aligns with what you’ll be studying in grad school.
Grad School Requirements: Since you mentioned that the bio minor covers the prerequisites for your desired grad programs, check with the schools you’re interested in. Some may value a double major, but others may simply look for a strong GPA and relevant experience.
Time and Stress: Consider how adding an additional semester will affect your workload and stress levels. If you can handle it without negatively impacting your grades or well-being, it could be a good opportunity. However, you don’t want to compromise your current academic performance or mental health.
Research Opportunities: A double major might provide you with more research opportunities or access to faculty in the biology department, which could be beneficial for letters of recommendation or gaining experience.
Financial Implications: Keep in mind the potential costs of an additional semester. Weigh this against the potential benefits of having a double major on your resume.
Ultimately, if you are passionate about biology and feel that it will enrich your understanding of exercise science and help you in your future career, it could be a worthwhile pursuit. However, if it feels like too much or doesn’t add significant value to your goals, focusing on your current major and minor could be the better choice. Good luck!
