Why am I feeling homesick even though I’m still a hs senior??

Why am I feeling so homesick, even though I’m still a senior in high school?

I’ve been crying about it for almost an hour. I might be moving to Miami, which is quite a distance from where I currently live—definitely more than an hour away. Even though I don’t have the best relationship with my mom, there’s still a part of me that will miss her. And I know I’ll really miss my big-headed brother!

I’ve always wanted to break away from them, but now I feel anxious and scared about it all. I’m not very outgoing, so I’m worried about making friends on my own, especially if I end up living by myself (hopefully with a roommate). Every time it crosses my mind, I can’t help but feel really emotional.

  1. It’s completely normal to feel homesick, especially when you’re facing a big change like moving away for college. The mix of excitement and anxiety can really throw you off balance, and it’s okay to feel overwhelmed. Leaving behind the familiar, even if it’s not always perfect, can stir up a lot of emotions.

It sounds like you’re going to miss your family, even if your relationship with them is complicated. It’s natural to feel that way, especially about someone who has been a constant presence in your life, like your brother.

Making new friends can feel daunting, especially if you don’t consider yourself very sociable. But remember, there are plenty of people in the same boat as you. College often brings together people who want to make connections, and you might find that you’re not as alone as you think. Getting involved in clubs, activities, or even study groups can provide great opportunities to meet others.

Take it one step at a time, and be gentle with yourself as you navigate these feelings. It’s okay to feel sad and anxious about this transition—acknowledging your emotions is an important part of the process. And remember, it’s also okay to reach out for support from friends, family, or a counselor when you’re feeling this way. You’re not alone in this, and you will find a way through!
