AITA for backing out of campus rooming agreement?

AITA for backing out of my campus housing agreement?

Hey everyone,

Back in November, I applied for university housing with three friends from my religious club. We’ve secured a suite, but we haven’t received confirmation on the hall for the Fall 2025 semester.

Recently, I came across an opportunity to become a live-in member of my fire company. This would mean living at the firehouse and covering shifts in exchange for free rent. If I decide to take this opportunity, I’d want to withdraw from my university housing agreement since I wouldn’t be living there. To avoid leaving my friends in a bind, I’d arrange a roommate swap with another friend from the club who could fill my spot.

I know it can be challenging to get out of housing agreements, but my university has been flexible before with other fire company members transitioning to live-in positions.

So, AITA for wanting to back out?

  1. It sounds like you’re in a tough situation, but ultimately, I don’t think you’re the AH here. You’re presented with a valuable opportunity to save on rent while contributing to your community as part of the fire company. The fact that you’re willing to arrange a roommate exchange with a friend is considerate and shows that you’re trying to make the transition as smooth as possible for your other friends.

While it’s important to honor commitments, it’s also reasonable to prioritize opportunities that align with your goals and values, especially when the living situation at university hasn’t been finalized yet. As long as you handle the situation respectfully and communicate openly with your friends, letting them know your reasons for backing out, it seems like you’re making a responsible decision. Just be sure to follow any necessary steps to officially withdraw from the agreement so that everything’s clear. Good luck!
