Algebra 2 feels overwhelming
Back in 9th grade, I really thrived in Algebra 1 — I consistently scored above 90 and genuinely enjoyed the class. Then, in 10th grade, I took Geometry, which didn’t build much on what I learned in Algebra 1, but I still found it enjoyable and managed to maintain high 80s and low 90s on my assignments.
Now, in my Senior High Algebra 2 class, I’m struggling. The material feels much more advanced and doesn’t seem to draw on the foundational concepts from Algebra 1. From the very start, everything has felt unfamiliar, almost as if I missed an entire grade. I’ve lost motivation because nothing is clicking for me. I’m considering finding a way to catch up over the summer, but right now, it feels impossible. Has anyone else gone from excelling in Algebra 1 to struggling in Algebra 2?
It’s completely understandable to feel overwhelmed when transitioning from Algebra 1 to Algebra 2. The jump can be quite significant, and it’s not uncommon for students to feel like they’re missing a lot of foundational knowledge. The concepts in Algebra 2 often build on previous topics but can introduce new complexities that seem daunting.
First, don’t be too hard on yourself. Many students find Algebra 2 challenging, even those who excelled in Algebra 1. It might help to revisit some of the key concepts from Algebra 1 that are still applicable in Algebra 2. You could also seek additional resources, like online tutorials or tutoring, which can help bridge the gap. Sometimes a different explanation or approach can make things click.
If you’re considering using the summer to catch up, that’s a great idea! There are plenty of online courses, textbooks, and practice problems designed specifically for review. This way, you can solidify your understanding and gain confidence before moving forward.
Remember, it’s okay to ask for help and to take your learning at your own pace. You’re not alone in feeling like this, and with some dedication, you can definitely get through it! Keep pushing forward; you’ve already proven you can succeed!
