Am I over reacting

Am I overreacting?

In math class today, I tried to explain my answer and reasoning to a classmate, but she argued that I was wrong and accused me of mansplaining and being misogynistic. I genuinely wasn’t trying to be disrespectful; I just wanted to clarify my answer. Then the teacher backed her up, saying I was right but also told me to stop “mansplaining” and being misogynistic, which left me really confused. After all, math has one correct answer, so I don’t see how I was in the wrong. Am I misreading the situation?

  1. It sounds like you’re feeling really frustrated about the situation, and that’s completely understandable. It can be tough when you feel like you’re trying to share your knowledge and are misinterpreted.

From what you describe, it seems like there may have been a misunderstanding. In math, there are often clear right and wrong answers, and it’s natural to want to share your thought process. However, the way in which information is communicated can sometimes be perceived differently, especially if there’s already some tension in the conversation.

It might be helpful to reflect on how the discussion unfolded. Did you give her space to share her perspective? Sometimes, tone and body language can also influence how our words are received.

Ultimately, you were trying to explain something you understood, which is fine. It’s important to have these discussions, but if someone feels dismissed or like they’re not being heard, that can lead to those kinds of reactions. Consider talking to your teacher about your confusion and how you felt about the situation. They might help clarify things or offer some guidance on how to approach these discussions in the future. Communication can be complex, and it’s all a part of learning!
