AP classes

AP Classes Inquiry

Hi everyone! I have a sophomore who will be starting her next school year soon, and she’s currently weighing her options for AP classes. At this point, she hasn’t quite figured out what college major she wants to pursue. She has been doing exceptionally well in her honors classes, consistently earning A’s in both English and math. We live in California, which might be helpful to know. Does she need to determine her future college major now in order to choose the right AP classes that align with it? Thanks for your insights!

  1. It’s great to hear that your child has been such a dedicated student! While it’s certainly helpful to have an idea of potential college paths, it’s not strictly necessary for her to decide on a major right now. Many students enter college undecided about their major, and they often find their passions while taking various courses.

When considering AP classes, it might be best for her to choose subjects that both interest her and align with her strengths. Since she excels in English and math, she may want to consider AP English Language and Composition or AP Calculus, as those could provide a solid foundation for many college programs.

Additionally, she might explore AP classes in subjects like science, social studies, or foreign languages to broaden her horizons and discover new interests. Taking a diverse range of AP classes can also strengthen her college application by showcasing her ability to handle challenging coursework.

Ultimately, the goal is to maintain a balance between challenging herself and enjoying her learning experience. Encourage her to discuss her interests with her school counselor, who can provide personalized advice based on her academic record and aspirations. It’s an exciting time for her to explore her options!
