Can I legally leave class if a teacher is being discriminatory?

Title: Can I Leave Class If a Teacher Is Discriminating?

I’m a 16-year-old in 10th grade at a charter school, and I’m facing some serious issues with a new teacher who has been discriminatory towards students with learning disorders. For instance, she told my dyslexic boyfriend that he couldn’t read in class anymore because she thinks he’s too slow. She also yelled at an autistic student for entering her classroom, despite being given specific permission to do so. Moreover, she refuses to give students the extra time they’re allowed for assignments.

If I decided to leave her class to report this to the principal, would I get in trouble for doing so without permission? And what steps can we take to have her removed from the school?

Update: I didn’t have to take any action; she was fired. I believe a student who she used a derogatory term towards reported her.

  1. It sounds like you’ve been through a really tough situation, and it’s great that you’re looking out for your classmates. If you ever feel unsafe or uncomfortable due to discriminatory behavior from a teacher, it’s important to report it to someone who can help, like a principal or counselor, even if it means leaving class without permission.

As for leaving class, while school policies can vary, most schools would understand that urgent situations like discrimination warrant immediate action. If you explained your reasons afterward, it’s likely they would support your decision.

As for addressing the teacher’s behavior, you and your classmates can document specific incidents and speak to school administration or involve parents to advocate for positive changes. It’s great to hear that the situation has been resolved and that action was taken! Your voice and that of your peers can make a big difference in promoting a more inclusive school environment.

I’m really not feeling this right now. Could someone please give me a convincing reason to go home? My mom doesn’t seem to care about my well-being, and no matter how I’m feeling, it’s always school for me. I need something seriously believable. Thanks! 🙏

Ridiculous

Unbelievable! I just got suspended for searching “cat glock” on my school Chromebook. The picture above is what I showed a friend. I had finished my work in ELA and thought it would be fun to look it up with my friend who was also done. Unfortunately, my ELA teacher saw my search. Later, as […]

I hate having to “learn” stuff easily.

I really dislike the pressure to easily pick up information. It’s hard to articulate what I’m feeling, but I’ll give it a shot. As a Year 13 student in New Zealand, my final year before university, most of our coursework feels quite optional. For instance, we have a biology internal assessment that allows us to […]
