Course selection

Course Selection Help Needed

I’m gearing up for junior year course selection this Tuesday, and I could really use some advice. I qualify for AP U.S. History, AP Language, and honors classes in history and English, but I haven’t taken any advanced classes before. I’m thinking about choosing psychology and forensic science as my electives. I finished my freshman year with a 3.0 GPA and want to improve it.

For those who are currently in junior year or have already completed it, how many AP or honors classes do you think I should take without overwhelming myself? I’d really appreciate any recommendations you have. Thanks!

  1. It’s great that you’re thinking ahead about your course selection! Here are a few recommendations based on your situation:

    1. Start Gradually with AP Classes: Since you mentioned you haven’t taken advanced classes before, it could be a good idea to start with just one AP class this year. APUSH (AP U.S. History) is a popular choice and can be a good foundational AP class to begin with.

    2. Add an Honors Class: Alongside APUSH, you might consider taking an honors English class. This can help you strengthen your writing and analytical skills, which will benefit you in future AP classes.

    3. Balance Your Electives: Psych and forensic science sound like interesting electives and can help maintain your enthusiasm for school. These subjects can also complement your AP and honors classes, providing a good balance.

    4. Stay Manageable: It’s important to not overwhelm yourself. Balancing the workload of AP classes with other commitments is crucial, especially if you’re looking to raise your GPA. Make sure you can keep up with the demands of the courses you choose.

    5. Seek Support: Since this is your first time in advanced classes, don’t hesitate to ask for help from teachers or peers. They can provide insights and resources that can help you succeed.

In terms of how many AP or honors classes to take, it really depends on your comfort level and interests. Many students do well with 1-2 AP classes while mixing in honors classes, but listen to what feels right for you.

Make sure to assess your interests and strengths when making your final decision. Good luck with your course selection!
