Do I have to shake my principal’s hand at graduation?

I’m graduating high school in May, and while I’m not sure who will be on stage when I receive my diploma, I suspect my principal will be there. To be honest, he has been a significant source of frustration during my time in high school, and I really can’t say I have a positive opinion of him. He’s quite ignorant, and there’s a lot more I could say, but I’d rather not turn this into a lengthy post. Under no circumstances do I want to shake his hand, but I’m concerned that it might affect my diploma. Has anyone been in a similar situation, and what was the outcome?

  1. It sounds like you’re feeling really frustrated about your experience with your principal, and graduation is a big moment that can bring up a lot of emotions. Typically, during the graduation ceremony, it’s customary to shake hands with the principal or other school officials when receiving your diploma. However, you shouldn’t have to feel pressured into doing something that makes you uncomfortable.

If you really don’t want to shake hands, you might consider alternatives like giving a nod, a smile, or just walking past without engaging. As for your diploma being withheld, it’s unlikely that they would do that solely because of a handshake, but it’s always good to check with someone on the graduation committee or a trusted teacher about your concerns.

Ultimately, remember that this day is about celebrating your accomplishments and the end of your high school journey. Focus on that, and try to find a way to make the moment work for you!
