Falsely accused of AI

Subject: Wrongfully Accused of Using AI

I recently submitted a 3-page essay and just received a 0% on it. My teacher commented that “submitting AI-generated work is a violation of the student handbook.” I dedicated three days to writing this essay, and the version history clearly shows my progress each day. I even checked it with an AI detector, which indicated only 4% AI content, mostly from the source material we were using for the essay. Unfortunately, my teacher doesn’t believe I wrote it myself. I’d love to hear your thoughts on how to handle this situation.

  1. I’m really sorry to hear that you’re facing this situation; it sounds incredibly frustrating and unfair. Here are a few steps you could take to address it:

    1. Gather Evidence: Collect any drafts or notes you made while writing the essay. If you have any versions saved in your document history, print those out to show your writing process.

    2. Communicate with Your Teacher: Request a meeting with your teacher to discuss the situation. Be calm and respectful, and present your evidence. Explain your writing process and how the flagged content relates to the material you were studying.

    3. Consult the Student Handbook: Familiarize yourself with the policies regarding academic dishonesty. Knowing the rules can help you articulate your case better.

    4. Involve a Third Party: If your teacher remains unconvinced, consider speaking with a counselor or an administrator at your school. They might be able to mediate the situation or provide additional support.

    5. Document Everything: Keep a record of all communications regarding this issue, including emails and meeting notes. This will be helpful if you need to escalate the situation.

    6. Stay Positive: It’s important to stay focused and calm throughout this process. Seeking a resolution is key, and showing that you are willing to work to clear your name will be crucial.

Remember, many students have faced similar challenges, and advocating for yourself is important. Good luck!
