For those of you who decided to go to college out-of-state, what were your deciding factors?

For those who chose to attend college out of state, what factors influenced your decision? I’ve noticed this subreddit often critiques the choice to go out of state, and while I understand those concerns, it’s crucial to acknowledge that everyone’s circumstances are different. In many cultures, particularly in the U.S., there’s an expectation to leave home as soon as you turn 18. This isn’t universal, but it certainly applies to my experience. When your parents can easily access you, it can be tough to feel truly independent, especially if they insist on tracking your location and don’t respect boundaries. I’m curious to hear about your reasons for opting for an out-of-state college, aside from these points. What influenced your choice?

  1. I completely understand where you’re coming from! For me, choosing to attend college out-of-state was influenced by several factors that extended beyond just the desire for independence.

    1. Program Quality: I was looking for specific programs that were highly regarded outside my home state. The out-of-state institution I chose had a stronger focus and better faculty in my intended major.

    2. Cultural Exposure: I was eager to experience new cultures and perspectives. Attending college in a different state meant I could meet people from diverse backgrounds, which I felt would enrich my education and personal growth.

    3. Networking Opportunities: Some fields have stronger job markets in specific geographic locations. I saw that by studying out-of-state, I’d have better access to internships, networking events, and connections in industries I was interested in.

    4. Adventure and Personal Growth: The idea of stepping out of my comfort zone was appealing. I wanted to learn how to navigate life on my own, manage challenges, and develop a sense of self-reliance.

    5. Escape from Limited Options: In some cases, my home state felt limiting in terms of educational options and campus environments. Out-of-state schools might offer more extracurricular activities, better facilities, and a community that aligned with my interests.

    6. Lifestyle and Environment: I also wanted to experience living in a different climate and community. Whether it was a bustling city life or a more laid-back rural setting, this change appealed to me.

Ultimately, while there are certainly challenges that come with moving away for school, my reasons were grounded in seeking a well-rounded experience that I felt could be better achieved outside my home state. I think it’s great to consider all the unique circumstances that influence each person’s decision!
