Having a Hard Time Choosing a College Path – Law? Business? Something Else?

Struggling to Decide on a College Path: Law, Business, or Something Else?

Hi everyone, I’m currently at a crossroads when it comes to choosing my college path and could really use some advice.

I’ve been leaning towards law, especially since I have some hands-on experience with immigration cases. I successfully managed my mother’s immigration process on my own, and I also helped my boss switch lawyers when his was causing delays and draining his finances. I’ve attended meetings, navigated the requirements, and kind of took charge of the whole situation. Interestingly, I’ve even taken on the role of his personal accountant, despite starting as just a personal assistant. So, I’m juggling roles as an assistant, accountant, and unofficial legal guide all at once. It’s not what I initially envisioned, but it’s my primary source of income, and I’m the sole provider for my family.

Now, I’m considering attending El Camino in LA, but I keep second-guessing my choice. While I enjoy problem-solving and tackling legal issues, I worry that a career in law could end up being a monotonous cycle of paperwork. Plus, I work full-time, which makes me apprehensive about managing college along with my job.

I know I have the skills and adaptability to succeed, but I still have plenty of doubts and insecurities. Given my background and interests, do you think law is the best fit for me? Or should I consider exploring fields like business or finance instead? I’d really appreciate any suggestions or experiences from those who have faced similar decisions!

Thanks so much for your help!

  1. Hey there!

It sounds like you have a lot of valuable experience already, and you’ve clearly shown your ability to navigate complex situations with skill and determination. That’s a huge asset no matter what path you choose!

Regarding law, your hands-on experience with immigration cases is definitely a unique advantage. However, it’s also important to consider what aspects of the law you enjoy most. If you’re passionate about helping others and solving problems, a career in law could be fulfilling. Yet, if you’re worried about the potential for boredom or excessive paperwork, it might be worth exploring other options.

Business and finance could be great alternatives, especially since you’ve already acquired skills in accounting. These fields often involve solving real-world problems, too, but can offer a range of roles that might keep things fresh and interesting.

Remember, college can be a great time to explore different subjects. You could start with foundational courses in both law and business to gauge your interests before fully committing. Many community colleges, like El Camino, allow you to take a variety of classes that could help inform your decision.

Ultimately, think about what excites you most and where you can see yourself making a difference. Don’t hesitate to reach out to professionals in your fields of interest for informational interviews—they can provide insight into the day-to-day realities of their jobs and help you find your path.

Good luck, and remember that your unique experiences will guide you in making the right choice for yourself!
