How can I politely let someone know I need some quiet time?
I have a friend at school with whom I enjoy chatting during lunch, but there are times when I want to focus on my phone (which is allowed at our school). He often asks me questions like “pick a number” even after I tell him I’d rather not chat or play. It can get a bit overwhelming, and sometimes I feel the need to change seats just to have a little peace. Any suggestions on how to address this more kindly?
It sounds like you’re in a bit of a tricky situation with your friend! It’s great that you want to be polite while setting boundaries. You could try saying something like, “Hey, I really enjoy our chats, but sometimes I just need a little quiet time to relax or focus on my phone. Can we take a break from talking during lunch today?” This way, you’re being honest about your feelings while still being kind. If he continues to ask you questions after that, you might need to gently remind him of your need for some quiet time. Good friends will understand and respect your boundaries.
