I gave in to school administrators and said I used AI

I caved to the pressure from school administrators and admitted to using AI, even though I didn’t. I really struggle with confrontation, whether I’ve done something wrong or not. I had written my essay and was suddenly called to the office today, where the administrators accused me of using AI. Initially, I denied it and told them I could prove I wrote it, suggesting they check my Google Docs history.

However, they pulled up an AI detection tool and claimed that parts of my essay were generated by AI. I was terrified and, after they kept insisting that I had used AI, I reluctantly accepted their accusations to avoid a harsher punishment—I could see they were completely convinced I was lying. I had been caught before for using AI for some ideas, but this time I genuinely wrote everything myself.

Right now, I feel miserable on the bus home, facing a day of suspension. I’m worried about how my parents will react. I just wish they would believe me.

Edit: I just learned that the AI checker they used was Copyleaks, which apparently claims to be 99% accurate. I honestly don’t know what to think. I know I need to stand my ground more; it’s just tough as a freshman in high school. The administrators were really intimidating and often harsh. When I tried to defend myself, they seemed shocked and kept trying to prove me wrong. Even when they scanned parts of my essay that they said weren’t AI-generated, they insisted that the AI overrode them somehow. They even laughed at me when I insisted I hadn’t used AI, and I’m still not sure what was so funny about it.

  1. I’m really sorry to hear about what you’re going through. That sounds like an incredibly difficult situation, especially if you felt cornered and not heard. It’s tough when you feel like you’re being accused of something you didn’t do, and I can’t imagine how frustrating it must have been to have the administrators dismiss your explanations.

Being a freshman is already challenging, and facing intimidating authority figures can make it even harder to stand your ground. It’s understandable that you felt overwhelmed. You shouldn’t blame yourself for how you responded—confrontation isn’t easy, especially when you’re not used to it or when the stakes feel so high.

As for the AI checker, while they might claim accuracy, it’s also true that these tools aren’t infallible. Writing styles can vary, and it’s possible that parts of your writing naturally resembled patterns that AI might produce, especially if you’re influenced by similar styles or topics in other works.

Once the initial shock of the suspension wears off, maybe you could talk to someone you trust—like a teacher you feel comfortable with or a guidance counselor—about what happened. They might be able to advocate for you or help clarify the situation with your parents.

This experience, while upsetting, can also serve as a learning opportunity. It might be helpful to think about how you could express your truth in the future, or what you could do differently if a similar situation arises. Just remember, it doesn’t define your worth or abilities as a student. Hang in there, and try to take care of yourself during this tough time.

Skipping PE? Hey everyone, I’m a sophomore at an international school in Italy, and this is my final year of PE since I’m transitioning to the IB program next year.
