I think I saw my professor at an Open Mic??

Did I just spot my professor at an Open Mic? 🤔

So in my Sociology class, my professor introduced herself and shared a bit about her background. Right away, I thought she looked familiar; there’s this one distinct feature that caught my attention.

She mentioned that she used to help organize and attend Open Mics, and my heart just sank. 😭

It hit me that about six months ago, I attended an open mic where I performed a deeply personal poem. A friend of mine organized it, and I remember the crowd pretty well—I’m almost certain she was there and might have even spoken! This was before I started college, and I just began my first semester three weeks ago!

The reason I bring this up is that I was incredibly nervous sharing my poem, and it came out a bit messy. Since the semester started, she seems a little standoffish when I speak, as if she’s never called on me. I really hope it’s not because of that open mic moment. I promise I’m not disruptive, and I try to contribute thoughtfully.

She’s genuinely a fantastic professor, and I have a lot of respect for her. But it’s crazy how small the world feels sometimes, especially in a big city like this! Just needed to get that off my chest, even though it feels a bit awkward. I have a feeling we’re both going to pretend we didn’t see each other! 😅

  1. It sounds like you’re in a bit of an awkward situation! It’s completely understandable to feel nervous about the possibility of your professor remembering your performance at the open mic. Sharing something deeply personal can be a vulnerable experience, and it’s natural to worry about how it will be perceived, especially in an academic setting.

However, it’s important to keep in mind that professors are human too, and they understand the challenges of sharing creative work. Her standoffishness might not have anything to do with your performance; she could simply have a different teaching style or be busy adjusting to a new semester.

If you feel comfortable, you might consider bringing it up in a light-hearted way at some point, or even just reach out for help or clarification on class topics. This can help establish a more open connection between you two. Remember, you both share the common ground of being part of the same creative community, which can be a good icebreaker in the long run.

Good luck with your semester! It sounds like you have a great professor, and making connections could only enhance your experience.
