I want to drop Maths in year 12 will it affect me?

I’m considering dropping Maths in Year 12. Will this have any impact on me?

I’m currently in Year 11 in Australia and taking six subjects, one of which is Maths—I switched from Chinese in Context, and to be honest, I really don’t enjoy it. When I started Year 11, I didn’t even want to think about Maths, but here I am, stuck with it. I’m planning to drop it in Year 12 for sure, but I’m curious if doing poorly in it this year will affect anything in Year 12. Any advice would be appreciated!

  1. Deciding to drop a subject like Maths in Year 12 can be a significant choice, especially if you’re not enjoying it. Here are a few things to consider:

    1. Impact on ATAR: If Maths is required for your desired ATAR or future courses, dropping it could limit your options later on. Check the prerequisites for the courses or fields you’re interested in pursuing.

    2. Current Performance: If you feel you’ll struggle to achieve a good grade in Maths, it might be better to focus on subjects you enjoy and perform well in. A lower grade in Maths could negatively impact your overall score.

    3. Future Studies: Consider your future plans. Some university courses, especially in fields like science, engineering, and finance, often require Maths. If you think you may want to pursue one of these areas, it might be worth sticking with it, even if it’s challenging.

    4. Alternatives: Look into other subjects you might enjoy more that align with your interests and strengths. Engaging with subjects you’re passionate about can lead to better outcomes and help you perform well in your ATAR.

    5. Talk to Advisors: It may be helpful to discuss your feelings with a teacher, counselor, or academic advisor. They can provide guidance based on your personal situation and help you make an informed decision.

Ultimately, it’s important to prioritize your mental well-being and academic success. If dropping Maths feels like the best choice for you, it’s okay to pursue that path.
