Am I Being Treated Unfairly by My Teacher?
I want to provide some background before asking for your thoughts on my situation. I’ve been dealing with an illness for the past 10 months that causes severe nausea, lightheadedness, and weakness, making it challenging to attend school regularly. On days when my symptoms are particularly bad, I either can’t make it to school or fear for my safety getting there, which has resulted in many missed classes.
While most of my teachers have been understanding and supportive, allowing me to make up work and providing extensions, my history teacher stands out as unsympathetic. He often seems passive-aggressive towards me when I attend class and doesn’t offer any assistance to help me succeed. For instance, I asked for a reference sheet to study for an upcoming test, but he simply blamed me for my absences and said he couldn’t provide anything.
There was a recent test I had to take, even though I hadn’t been taught the material beforehand. Initially, I didn’t think it was unfair, but then I found out that a friend of mine, who had been absent for a month while in Japan, was exempt from taking the test since the teacher deemed it “unfair” for him.
It’s worth noting that I was a dedicated student before my illness worsened. I actively participated in class and consistently completed my assignments on time. I strived to maintain that same level of commitment, but it has become increasingly difficult to catch up, especially since my teacher refuses to assist me. It feels as if he’s deliberately trying to make my situation harder as a punishment for being sick and missing school. What do you think?
It sounds like you’re in a really tough situation, and I’m sorry to hear you’ve been dealing with such a challenging time health-wise. From what you described, it certainly seems like your history teacher is not providing the support you need, especially considering your circumstances.
It’s concerning that he is treating your absences so differently compared to your friend who was away for a personal trip, as that highlights a lack of understanding or consideration for the genuine health issues you are facing. Your illness is beyond your control, and it’s understandable that it would impact your school attendance and performance.
It might be worth talking to a school counselor or administrator about your situation. They can often advocate for students who are facing difficulties and may be able to help facilitate a conversation with your teacher. It’s important for educators to recognize that students sometimes face unforeseen challenges, and a supportive response can make a big difference in a student’s experience and success.
Stay strong, and remember that it’s okay to seek help when you need it! You deserve support and understanding while you navigate your health and school work.
