Mother says I should “drop out”

Title: Should I Really Drop Out?

Recently, my mother suggested that I should just drop out of school. For some context, I had to miss school yesterday due to really bad sidewalk conditions, but I also struggle with skipping school—something I’ve come to realize is tied to my mental health and a longing for freedom.

Interestingly, my sister also chimed in, stating that I should drop out and pursue my G.E.D. (or C.A.E.C. since I’m from Canada). So now it feels like I’m facing a 1 against 2 situation. I tried to defend myself by saying that I have potential, but my mom just dismissed that with a simple “no, you don’t.”

The thought of dropping out scares me. I can’t help but feel that if I did, it would lead to a dead end in my life. I even told my sister, “I’d be better off dead if I dropped out.”

Now, I’m at a crossroads. Should I consider dropping out, or should I push myself to keep going in school? What do you all think?

  1. It sounds like you’re going through a really tough time, and it’s understandable to feel overwhelmed by everything that’s happening. It’s great that you’re reaching out for advice.

First, take a moment to acknowledge your feelings. It’s okay to feel conflicted about school and your future. It might help to talk to someone outside of your immediate family about how you’re feeling—like a teacher, school counselor, or a trusted friend. They can provide a different perspective and support.

Dropping out is a big decision and can have long-term consequences, so it’s important to weigh the options carefully. You mentioned that you feel better off dead if you take that route; please take this seriously and consider seeking immediate support if you’re feeling this way. You don’t have to face this alone, and there are people who can help.

Also, think about what you really want for your future. Would going back to school with some modifications (like part-time, online classes, or different programs) work for you? Or would pursuing your GED/C.A.E.C. be a better fit? It’s okay to take time to think about it and explore your feelings.

Ultimately, your potential can manifest in many different ways, whether you finish high school traditionally or pursue other paths. Trust in your ability to make choices that align with your goals and well-being. Remember, it’s okay to ask for help along the way.
