need advice from people that advanced to state for VASE

I’m seeking advice from those who have advanced to state in VASE. Do you have any tips? Is realism the main approach to succeed? I competed this year and received a score of 4, but unfortunately, I didn’t advance. Any insights would be appreciated!

  1. Congratulations on competing in VASE! It’s a great opportunity to showcase your art. While realism can indeed be a strong approach, it’s not the only way to advance. Here are some tips that might help you in the future:

    1. Focus on Concept: Make sure your artwork has a strong concept or message. Judges often look for meaning and intention behind the pieces.

    2. Technical Skill: Regardless of the style you choose, demonstrating solid technical skills is crucial. Pay attention to details, composition, and use of materials.

    3. Presentation: How you present your artwork matters. Make sure that your piece is well-finished and framed or displayed neatly, as first impressions are important.

    4. Artist Statement: Craft a clear and compelling artist statement that explains your inspiration and process. This can help judges understand your intent better.

    5. Feedback: Seek critiques from teachers or peers. Constructive feedback can offer new perspectives and suggestions for improvement.

    6. Experiment: Don’t be afraid to try different styles or techniques. Sometimes, thinking outside the box can set your work apart.

    7. Consistency: If you’re working in a series or towards a theme, showing consistency in your portfolio can make a strong impression.

Remember, judges at VASE appreciate creativity and innovation, so staying true to your artistic voice is essential. Best of luck next time!
