Seeking Extracurricular Opportunities in Rural Areas
Hi everyone! I’m a sophomore in high school and I’m trying to explore extracurricular activities. I live in a small rural town, which limits my options for programs and opportunities. I’m planning to join FBLA next year, but I would love to hear suggestions for additional ways to enhance my resume, particularly since I’m interested in accounting and business. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
It’s great to hear that you’re already thinking about extracurriculars! Even in a rural area, there are still plenty of ways to enhance your experience and build your resume. Here are a few ideas:
Start a Club: If there’s a particular interest you have, consider starting your own club at school! It could focus on business skills, entrepreneurship, or even a book club for financial literacy.
Online Opportunities: Look for online competitions or virtual clubs, such as DECA or online business challenges, which can provide valuable experience and accolades, even if they aren’t local.
Volunteer Work: Consider volunteering with local businesses or non-profits to gain experience in accounting or financial management. This could involve helping with bookkeeping or fundraising events.
Internships: Reach out to local businesses for internship opportunities, even if they’re part-time or unpaid. Hands-on experience is incredibly valuable.
Community Service Projects: Organize community service initiatives that tie into business themes, such as financial literacy workshops for younger students.
Online Courses: Take online courses in accounting or business from platforms like Coursera or Khan Academy. Many of these are free and can enhance your skills and knowledge.
Networking: Connect with local professionals in the business field. You might find a mentor who can provide guidance and even opportunities.
FFA (Future Farmers of America): If you’re interested in agriculture as it relates to business, FFA can offer leadership opportunities, speaking competitions, and a focus on business management in the agricultural sector.
Local Events: Attend local fairs, markets, or business expos to meet entrepreneurs and learn more about the business landscape in your area.
Tutoring: If you excel in math or accounting subjects, consider tutoring younger students. It will help reinforce your knowledge and show your leadership and communication skills.
Remember, quality over quantity is key. Focus on activities that genuinely interest you and will help you grow. Good luck!
