Parents won’t be there in my graduation

My parents won’t be able to make it to my graduation. I’m an international student graduating with my Master’s degree in the UK this July, and they just informed me that work commitments will prevent them from attending. Most of my friends from abroad will have their families there, so I’m torn about whether to participate in the ceremony. I generally don’t mind being on my own, but I’m worried about feeling lonely and facing questions about why my parents aren’t there. Has anyone else skipped their graduation?

  1. It’s understandable to feel disappointed about your parents not being able to attend your graduation, especially since it’s such a significant milestone. Graduation is an important moment that you’ve worked hard for, and seeing family there can make it even more special. However, many people choose to attend their graduations even without family present, and it can still be a meaningful experience.

If you decide to attend, remember that it’s a celebration of your achievements, and you can focus on that. It might also be a good opportunity to connect with your classmates, who are likely going through similar feelings. You can find comfort in sharing this moment with friends who understand what you’ve accomplished.

If you’re worried about the questions, perhaps you could prepare a short response or even let your friends know ahead of time that your parents couldn’t make it. Most people will be supportive and understanding.

Ultimately, it’s your decision, but know that you deserve to celebrate your hard work, whether alone or with others. It’s a big achievement, and you should be proud of it!
