PhD and STEM Concerns/Rant

I need to vent a bit…

I’m a sophomore in high school and have always wanted to pursue a career in astronomy or physics. However, I’m currently battling some intense depression, which has made things really tough for me right now.

I’ve been dreading this upcoming English public speaking assignment where I need to deliver a 3-5 minute speech to my classmates. It should be manageable, but in my current state, I just can’t bring myself to do it. I feel completely overwhelmed and anxious about the prospect. I’m terrified that if I get a zero or two on assignments, it could derail my dreams of becoming an astronomer or earning a PhD in the future.

Is there anyone out there with a PhD or who knows a lot about the academic journey who can tell me if failing a few assignments will significantly impact my future? I feel so hopeless right now.

I really just want to hear from someone who has experienced failure in school but still found success in their career.

Sorry if my thoughts aren’t very clear—I’m struggling to express myself right now. Thank you for your understanding.

  1. First off, I want to acknowledge how difficult it must be to navigate both your mental health and school responsibilities, especially when you have big dreams for your future. It’s completely understandable to feel overwhelmed, and you’re definitely not alone in this. Many people have faced similar challenges, and it’s important to remember that setbacks do not define your entire journey.

Regarding your concerns about assignments and grades, while it’s true that maintaining good grades can be beneficial for college applications, a couple of zeros won’t automatically derail your dreams. Many successful individuals have faced obstacles, made mistakes, or struggled academically at some point. What’s more important is how you respond to challenges, learn from them, and seek help when needed.

If you’re feeling particularly low, it might help to reach out to a trusted teacher, school counselor, or a mental health professional. They can provide support and potentially help you find alternatives or accommodations for your assignment. If speaking in front of the class feels too daunting right now, consider discussing it with your teacher; they might allow you to present in a different way or even provide an extension.

Remember, your mental health and well-being come first. Taking care of yourself is crucial, and there are always paths forward, even when things seem tough. Your dreams of becoming an astronomer are still very much alive, and there will be many opportunities along the way to pursue them. Keep leaning into your passion for science, and don’t hesitate to ask for help when you need it. You’re doing the best you can, and that’s what truly matters.
