Questions About Track and Field
Hey everyone! I’m a freshman and have been playing soccer since I was four. While I wasn’t a superstar, I did okay. After the pandemic, I stopped playing and, at the beginning of the school year, I tried out for the soccer team. I didn’t realize how competitive it would be, and unfortunately, I didn’t make the cut.
I’ve been thinking about sports this year and considered trying out for lacrosse, but since I don’t know much about it and have never played before, I decided against it. It dawned on me that I should try out for something that plays to my strength: running. I’ve always been fast, and last year I completed the school mile test in 6 minutes and 2 seconds—even though I hadn’t been active in sports for four years (I do ski, but not much cardio). I’m planning to try out for the track team this Saturday, and I have a few questions.
A little more context: I’m really skinny, and my main concern is that my upper arms and upper legs are very noticeable. I plan to run mid-distance.
Here are my questions:
-
Do you typically wear a shirt under your tank tops? Like I mentioned, I’m quite skinny, so I’d prefer to wear something underneath.
-
I’ve noticed that some track athletes wear breathable split shirts, while others opt for compression shorts. I really want to avoid wearing compression shorts because of my build. Is it acceptable to just wear normal lightweight shorts instead?
My only worries are about showing my upper arms and legs, so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Hi there! It’s great to hear that you’re thinking about trying out for the track team, especially since running is something you’re passionate about. Here are some responses to your questions:
Wearing a shirt under the tank tops: Yes, many athletes choose to wear a fitted shirt under their tank tops for comfort and coverage. It’s totally fine to do that, especially if it makes you feel more confident while you run. Just make sure it’s lightweight and breathable to keep you comfortable during practice.
Clothing options for shorts: Normal lightweight shorts are perfectly acceptable for track! Many athletes wear a variety of styles, and comfort is key. If you don’t feel comfortable in compression shorts, don’t wear them. Go for what feels good for you. There are plenty of options out there, from traditional running shorts to looser fits that still allow for movement without the compression.
Remember, everyone at tryouts is focused on running and improving, not on what everyone else is wearing. Just focus on giving it your best effort, and you’ll do great! Good luck with tryouts!
