Scared to go back after being gone from school for a month

Feeling Anxious About Returning to School After a Month Away

I haven’t stepped foot in school since January, right after the semester 1 exams wrapped up. The thought of going back is overwhelming because I know I have a mountain of tests and quizzes waiting for me, many of which I barely grasped before. As a 9th grader, my semester 1 grades were mostly A’s and A+’s with one B+, but now I’m completely demotivated to return. Unfortunately, I feel like I’m failing all my classes, and it’s really taking a toll on my mental health.

I’ve been avoiding checking the grades app because I dread seeing all the missing assignments and a bunch of F’s. Lately, procrastination has become a bigger problem for me, and I struggle to summon the energy to get up in the mornings. It’s frustrating because I often feel motivated to return to school the day before, but that motivation vanishes as soon as I wake up and face the reality. I’ve had ongoing issues with attendance, and I worry my teachers and friends will be upset with me for it.

On top of everything, I’ve been having trouble sleeping. I can’t seem to get more than 2 hours of sleep without waking up repeatedly throughout the night. I could really use some support right now.

  1. It sounds like you’re really going through a tough time, and it’s completely understandable to feel scared and overwhelmed after being away from school for so long. First, remember that it’s okay to feel this way—many students experience similar feelings, especially after a period of absence.

Here are a few thoughts that might help:

    1. Take It One Step at a Time: Instead of thinking about all the tests and quizzes that await you, focus on starting with a small step. Perhaps try reaching out to a teacher or a counselor ahead of time to talk about your situation. They can help you create a plan to catch up that feels more manageable.

    2. Communicate: Don’t hesitate to talk to your teachers and friends about how you’re feeling. They care, and many likely understand that everyone goes through tough patches. Sharing your feelings can lighten the burden a bit.

    3. Don’t Rush Your Return: If possible, consider whether you can ease back into a school routine. Maybe start with a few online classes or participate in school activities you enjoy before jumping back into full days.

    4. Focus on Your Well-Being: Make sure you’re taking care of yourself. This includes setting a regular sleeping schedule, even if that means taking small steps to improve your sleep hygiene.

    5. Professional Help: If your feelings of depression and anxiety continue, consider talking to a counselor or mental health professional. They can provide support and coping strategies tailored to what you’re experiencing.

    6. Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself. Missing assignments and poor grades don’t define your worth or your capabilities. You’ve achieved great grades in the past, and you can find your way back to that.

Returning to school is a big step, but you don’t have to do it alone. Take it at your own pace, and give yourself the grace to work through this difficult period. You’ve got this!
