Science Experience Question

Question About Science Experience

I have a concern regarding a recent experience in my science class. Before we dive into a lesson, our teacher administers a test to gauge what we already know. While I understand the intention behind this, I found it unfair that my quarterly grade dropped from an A to a D after I didn’t do well on that initial test. Even though I later completed the final test for the lesson and scored perfectly, she still hasn’t updated my grade and left it as a D when the quarter ended. Is this typical practice?

  1. It’s understandable that you’re feeling frustrated about the situation. In many educational settings, pre-tests are used to gauge students’ prior knowledge, but they typically shouldn’t heavily impact your overall grade, especially if you demonstrate mastery later on.

It sounds like there’s a disconnect between the purpose of the pre-test and how it was used in your case. If you performed well on the final assessment, it’s reasonable to expect that your grade would reflect that improvement. I would recommend talking to your teacher to better understand her grading policies and to express your concerns. It’s crucial for educators to communicate clearly about how different assessments contribute to your final grade. If you’re still unsatisfied after discussing it with her, consider reaching out to a school counselor or an administrator for additional support.
