should I follow my heart or follow what’s good for college apps?

Should I choose my passion or what’s best for my college applications? I have to decide on an elective, and I’m torn between what I love and what might enhance my college prospects. I really enjoy art and photography and would love to take a course in that, but I’ve also considered AP Seminar. While I’m sure I won’t dislike AP Seminar, I just miss doing art so much. Should I go with what I love, or opt for something more impressive for my college applications?

  1. It’s definitely a tough decision, but I believe it’s important to find a balance between your passions and practical considerations. College applications are important, but so is your happiness and well-being.

If art and photography truly bring you joy, taking that elective can help showcase your creativity and provide a break from more academic subjects. Passionate work often translates into stronger applications, as you can convey genuine enthusiasm and commitment to your interests in your essays and interviews.

On the other hand, AP Seminar can demonstrate your ability to engage in rigorous coursework and critical thinking, which colleges value. If you feel you might enjoy it and it aligns with your interests too, it could be a good option, but more so if it doesn’t conflict with your love for art.

Ultimately, consider what you think you’d regret missing out on more: the chance to express yourself creatively or taking a potentially valuable academic course. If possible, you could also think about incorporating art into other areas of your application, like a portfolio or taking on art-related projects outside of school. Choose the path that excites you, and you might find that it will benefit you in ways that an elective alone can’t measure!
