Considering Dropping Out of My Psychology Program

Hey everyone, I’m a sophomore studying psychology, and to be honest, I’m contemplating dropping out. I originally chose this path because I was passionate about helping others. Teaching was my first choice, but I was advised against it due to concerns about salary, so I shifted to mental health advocacy in my community, thinking it would be a safer option. I also believed that a psychology degree would only take four years (spoiler: it’s definitely more complicated than I thought!).

For a while now, I’ve been grappling with the idea of dropping out, but I keep pushing those thoughts aside, hoping it’s just a phase. I also fear disappointing my family, friends, and community. Here are some thoughts I’ve had about my options:

  • Switching majors: I worry that I’d be falling behind my peers and that time is slipping away.

  • Changing schools while keeping my major: I struggle with social anxiety, and the thought of starting fresh in a new environment is daunting.

  • Dropping out: I genuinely don’t know what I’d do next. I keep telling myself I could just work and make money, but I’m currently employed at my school’s dining hall and I’m acutely aware of how tough the job market is right now.
