What qualifies as an achievement, and can you provide some examples?
Hi everyone, I’m applying for nursing school, and a professor who is writing a recommendation letter for me has requested a brief paragraph of my achievements. Unfortunately, I’m not sure what to include. I hold a bachelor’s degree in history from another college and currently maintain a strong GPA at my current school, but that’s about it.
After graduating from my previous college, I immediately returned to school for nursing, so I haven’t had a job or any scholarships during this time.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Apologies for the poor writing. Thank you!
Hi there! It’s great that you’re applying for nursing and seeking a recommendation letter. Even if you think your achievements are modest, there are several points you can highlight:
Academic Success: Mention your bachelor’s degree in history and your good GPA in your current nursing program. This shows your dedication and ability to succeed in a challenging academic environment.
Commitment to Nursing: You made a significant decision to return to school for nursing just six months after graduating. This shows your passion and commitment to pursuing a career in healthcare.
Relevant Skills: Think about any volunteer work or extracurricular activities related to healthcare, even if they’re informal. For instance, if you’ve volunteered at a hospital, nursing home, or community health events, those experiences can be highlighted.
Transferable Skills: Your background in history might have helped you develop strong research, critical thinking, and communication skills, all of which are valuable in nursing.
Personal Qualities: Reflect on any personal qualities or experiences that make you a good fit for nursing—like empathy, teamwork, or resilience.
Here’s a brief paragraph you could consider using:
“I hold a bachelor’s degree in history and have maintained a strong GPA in my current nursing program, demonstrating my commitment to academic excellence. My decision to return to school for nursing just six months after completing my degree reflects my dedication to pursuing a career in healthcare. Through my studies, I have developed critical thinking and communication skills, and I am eager to apply these in a nursing context. I am passionate about making a positive impact in patients’ lives and am committed to continuing my education and professional growth in this field.”
Feel free to modify this to make it sound more like you! Good luck with your application!
