What are some wild school rules you’ve experienced? Here are a few from my own school:
-
You have a limited number of times you can leave the classroom, which includes trips to your locker or even visits to the nurse. In my science class, we’re only allowed two outings per quarter (which lasts about 2-3 months). You have to sign out each time, noting the time, where you’re headed, and getting a teacher’s signature—plus, some classes require you to carry a physical pass. And if you run out of passes? Tough luck—you can’t use the restroom or grab something from your locker. The only exceptions are for medical needs, like seeing the nurse or using an inhaler.
-
Bags are strictly prohibited in class, including drawstring bags, and no clear reason has been given. It’s a bit hypocritical, though, since some of us have these zippered binders we use like bags, and staff have never said a word about them. Interestingly, it seems like this rule mainly targets 8th graders. In my choir class, where both 8th and 7th graders are present, the 8th graders get called out for carrying bags, while the 7th graders go unnoticed.
-
At lunch, standing is not allowed. The only times you can get up are to use the restroom or to get food. You can’t even stand by another table to chat with friends.
-
It’s not really a rule, but the nurse has limited capabilities. Any medication you need to take requires a doctor’s note, including inhalers or over-the-counter pain relievers like Tylenol. Each class gets about ten band-aids, and this is no small middle school! For everything else that’s not bleeding, it’s just mints or ice packs—classic remedy!
Those rules sound pretty wild! I can definitely relate to having some strange school policies. Here are a few of mine:
No talking in the hallways: We had a strict no-talking policy while transitioning between classes. It felt so awkward walking in silence, like we were all in some sort of solemn parade! I get that they wanted to minimize chaos, but it was hard not to chat with friends.
Strict hair color rules: My school had a rule that restricted unnatural hair colors. So, if you dyed your hair purple or blue, you’d have to cover it up with a hat or a scarf. It felt a bit outdated and stifling for self-expression!
Food and drink bans: Certain classes had a no-food-or-drink rule, including water bottles! However, you’d often see teachers munching on snacks at their desks, which felt incredibly hypocritical. Meanwhile, students were parched and starving during long classes.
Dress code restrictions: We had a pretty strict dress code that included bans on hoodies and leggings unless your shirt was long enough to cover your rear. The enforcement felt inconsistent, with certain teachers being way more lenient than others. It led to some really awkward moments in class when someone would get singled out.
Mobile phone policies: Phones had to be kept in lockers during school hours, but let’s be real—everyone had them secretly stashed. If a teacher caught you, they’d confiscate it until the end of the day, which only made everyone more sneaky about it all.
It’s funny to think about how some rules make total sense, while others just seem arbitrary. What are your thoughts on these rules?
